When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Photo Session?

One of the most common questions I get asked as a newborn photographer in Barnsley, South Yorkshire is: “When should I book my newborn photo session?”
The truth is – there’s no “perfect” time, only the time that works best for you and your family. But here’s my honest advice, based on years of experience photographing little ones…
Booking before your baby arrives 💕
The best time to book your newborn session is actually while you’re still pregnant – usually around your second trimester. By booking early:
You’re guaranteed a place in my diary.
We can be flexible around your due date (babies rarely arrive on schedule!).
You’ll have one less thing to think about once your baby is here.
The ideal age for newborn photos is between 5–18 days old – when babies are usually still very sleepy and curly, which makes those classic, peaceful poses easier to capture.
What if your baby is already here? 👶
Don’t worry – you haven’t missed your chance! Many families across Barnsley, Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster, and Pontefract contact me after their baby has already arrived. I regularly photograph babies up to 6 weeks old and beyond.
The photos may look a little different – fewer “curled-up” poses and more eye contact or natural family shots – but they are just as beautiful and special. In fact, I love capturing those tiny expressions and first glimpses of personality.
So even if your baby is a little older, I’ll still create a session that feels relaxed, natural, and truly “them.”
